NBN FTTP Upgrade Process – What You Need to Know

Upgrading to nbn® Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) is one of the best ways to improve your internet performance. Whether for home or business, full fibre provides faster speeds, greater reliability, and future-ready connectivity.

What’s Required for an FTTP Upgrade

NBN has strict installation requirements to ensure the upgrade is safe and compliant.

External Requirements

An NBN Utility Box (PCD) will be installed outside your premises. It must be:

  • Mounted safely above 400mm from ground level
  • Clear from gas, electricity, and water services
  • Accessible for technicians

Internal Requirements

An NBN Fibre Connection Box (NTD) must be installed:

  • Within 12 metres of the external utility box
  • Within 1.2 metres of a power outlet
  • In a cool, dry, ventilated location
  • Not in wet areas (bathroom, laundry, kitchen wet areas)
  • Not in a garage or bedroom unless specifically requested

If your preferred location is outside the 12-metre guideline, a Customer Installed Fibre Cable Pathway must be provided

How the FTTP Upgrade Process Works

Step 1 – Service Qualification

We check your address to confirm FTTP eligibility under NBN Fibre Connect or Business Fibre programs.


Step 2 – Pre-Installation Planning

We identify the best possible installation location and check power, cabling, and compliance.


Step 3 – External Fibre Work

NBN runs fibre to the property and installs the external utility box.

Step 4 – Internal Installation

On installation day, NBN:

  • Installs the internal Fibre Connection Box
  • May temporarily turn off power (30–60 minutes)
  • Connects your router
  • Tests and activates the service
